Why do I have allergies?

Allergies are not uncommon. In fact, over 50 million Americans suffer from them. Allergies are simply a response from your immune system. Normally, the immune system protects us from the threat of bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances.

In the case of allergies, our immune system is simply misunderstanding that something harmless in the environment such as pollen or dander, is not a threat. In responding to this perceived threat, the immune system triggers a response that results in what we perceive as allergies. Specifically, with environmental allergies, we often experience runny nose, itchy eyes, etc.

What are SmartDrops™?

SmartDrops™ is a therapy known as sublingual immunotherapy. Allergy drops are taken by mouth at home instead of constant visits to the doctor’s for shots.

The goal of immunotherapy is to stop your immune system from reacting to harmless things in the environment that currently cause you to sneeze and cough. This is a very common and safe method of treating the immune system that has been around for decades and has a great deal of medical literature to support it. In the United States, immunotherapy is most commonly known as allergy shots. SmartDrops™ are an alternative to allergy shots that are safer, and more convenient to take.

Are SmartDrops™ available at the pharmacy?

No. SmartDrops™ are specifically matched to those things that you are allergic to. Therefore, they are a kind of custom prescription. Using various forms of allergy testing, we determine what you are allergic to and then customize a treatment specifically targeted at those things that create your allergic response.

Are allergy drops safe and effective?

There is substantial medical evidence that sublingual immunotherapy such a SmartDrops™ work. This includes decades of research and medical literature; some of which you can find on this website in the clinical data section. Sublingual immunotherapy such as SmartDrops™ have been endorsed by the world health organization as an alternative to allergy shots.

Allergy drops are essentially made in an identical way to allergy shots except they are taken by mouth and absorbed under the tongue. Nevertheless, the FDA considers this kind of administration off label. We believe that this will be overturned in the near future because of the overwhelming data available. In other countries, allergy drops are used on a routine basis in lieu of allergy shots.

Does insurance cover this?

Commercial insurance does typically cover allergy testing and your initial visit. Because it is considered an off label medication, many insurance companies do not cover the cost of the drops. However, in virtually all cases, compared to co-pays involved with allergy shot office visits, the out-of-pocket cost for SmartDrops™ therapy is typically less expensive than allergy shots.

In addition, significant time is saved from the lack of weekly or biweekly office visits for shots. Finally, there is no question that reduction in allergy symptoms as a general rule, decreases the overall cost to manage the symptoms because of the significant decrease in need for over-the-counter allergy medication to treat symptoms.

Do SmartDrops™ treat food allergies?

At this time, our office only deals with environmental allergens. Food allergy testing maybe done upon request, however, we do not use sublingual immunotherapy to treat food allergy at this time.
